Reaction of 3-mercaptoindole and its ethyl derivatives with acetylene

1-Vinyl-3-vinylthioindole, 1-vinyl-3-ethylthioindole, and 1-ethyl-3-vinylthioindole, respectively, were obtained by the reaction of 3-mercaptoindole, 3-ethylthioindole, and 1-ethyl-3-mercaptoindole with acetylene. 3-Mercaptoindole reacts with acetylene in aqueous media to give 3-vinylthioindole. The structures of the vinyl derivatives of 3-mercaptoindole obtained were proved by means of IR and PMR spectroscopy and the results of elementary analysis.Translated from Khimiya Geterotsiklicheskikh Soedinenii, No. 3, pp. 352–354, March, 1979.     

Synthesis and properties of vinyl derivatives of 4,5-diphenyl-2-mercaptoimidazole

S-Vinyl-, N,S-divinyl-, and S-ethyl-N-vinyl-4,5-diphenyl-2-mercaptoimidazoles were synthesized by reaction of 4,5-diphenyl-2-mercaptoimidazole with acetylene under pressure. The reactivities of these monomers were investigated. It is shown that they have lower reactivities than S-and N,S-vinyl-2-mercaptobenzimidazoles in radical polimerization reactions and do not form complexes with transition metal salts.Translated from Khimiya Geterotsiklicheskikh Soedinenii, No. 4, pp. 516–520, April, 1976.     

A new phenol fromPinus sylvestris

Conclusions From the extractive substances of Scotch pine a phenolic compound has been isolated for which the structure of 3-hydroxy-5-methoxybenzyl alcohol has been established; it has been given the name sylvopinol.     

Water molecules in a protein cavity detected by a statistical-mechanical theory

Four water molecules confined in a small cavity of hen egg-white lysozyme were detected by means of the three-dimensional (3D) RISM theory, a statistical-mechanical theory of molecular solutions. This is the first theoretical realization of confined molecules in a protein without making nonsense tricks, such as placing the molecules in the space a priori. Possible impacts which the result may have on biochemistry and biophysics, including the molecular recognition, enzymatic reactions, etc., are discussed.     

Long-range spin-spin coupling and relative orientation of vinyl group in 1-venylpyrazole

Conclusions On the basis of the experimental values of the long-range spin-spin coupling constants of the protons it was established that in 1-vinylpyrazole and its 4-bromo derivative the vinyl group has predominantly a trans orientation relative to the nitrogen in the 2 position.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Seriya Khimicheskaya, No. 10, pp. 2363–2365, October, 1981.We express our gratitude to V. Proton magnetic resonance spectra of some silyl-substituted ethylenes
